WINNER FRASER COAST BUSINESS AND TOURISM EVENTS AWARDS 2021
Maryborough Open Gardens (Maryborough Horticultural Society) were Winners in the Events and Event Management Category at the 2021 Fraser Coast Business and Tourism Awards on Friday 5 November 2021. This was an honour for us and reflected the hard work, passion and commitment of the garden owners and volunteer sub-committee of the Maryborough Horticultural Society. Below is the speech that we gave at the Awards ceremony and we would also like to acknowledge St Stephens Hospital for sponsoring this award category.
In 2021 the Maryborough Open Gardens moved from a council event to being managed and delivered by a community group – the Maryborough Horticultural Society – for the first time. Maryborough Open Gardens is a unique event in that we are 100% reliant on the generosity of spirit of the participating private garden owners who provide visitors and locals the opportunity enjoy their gardens; and we do not charge an entry fee unlike the majority of Open Garden events.
Our approach is underpinned by the ethos of Accessible. Engaging. Inspirational. Sustainable. Welcoming. This was certainly evident with the approach of the volunteer organising committee who simply got on with the job at all times – in the true spirit of the event.
The 2021 Maryborough Open Gardens was an outstanding success with 9317 garden visits, especially when compared with 5721 garden visits in 2020 and 3611 in 2019. This year we had visitors from all parts of SEQ and the Wide Bay Burnett and we can say that, without a doubt, the event provided a positive economic impact for our region.
We again had the impact of COVID which meant that the Mary Poppins Festival was held over the same weekend. This provided additional opportunities and we would like to thank the Fraser Coast Tourism and Events team for their collaboration and engagement to support the Maryborough Open Gardens. We would also like to acknowledge and thank Fraser Coast Regional Council and Mayor Seymour for your support. Queens Park and Elizabeth Park Rose Gardens were looking wonderful so thank you to the Parks and Gardens team. We also had the support of the Maryborough Chamber of Commerce and Maryborough businesses through our Growing Locally campaign.
The Maryborough Open Gardens reflects the pride, passion and welcome of the participating garden owners with the event now becoming a must-do for many visitors and locals on their annual garden tourism “bouquet list”. The sum of the parts really does equal the whole. Thank you and please visit us during the 2022 Maryborough Open Gardens. As Peter Cundall would say – that’s Your Bloomin Lot…

… A Garden …
A small plot of earth was chosen to claim, To create our garden was the ultimate aim. Today we walk amongst its beauty and charm, Our patch of heaven has grown to be shared. It's still in the working as most gardens are, Come along and meet us - there is a garden in us all. Deborah and Trevor Lindenberg.
